As I was developing my online portfolio, I wanted to create a “single-page portfolio”-type view so visitors could quickly see all my work in a particular category on one page. Each portfolio item is a Wordpress post, and they’re rather large, with screenshots and sometimes multiple images, so I needed a way to indicate more content below, and to make it cleaner I wanted to avoid a lot of scrolling. I decided that a simple inline link to the next post on the page would be cleanest.

Unfortunately WordPress doesn’t come with such a function out-of-the-box; after much searching and head-scratching, I figured it out:

<a href="#post-<?php echo $wp_query->posts[$wp_query->current_post + 1]->ID; ?>" title="View next item below">Next &darr;</a>

Ultimately it’s very simple – the PHP in the above snippet displays the post id of the next post (which is, duh, the current_post + 1). This PHP is inserted into an inline link within the WordPress Loop and viola! The link created jumps to the next one on the page.

I added a little more logic to the page – the last item on the page doesn’t need a link like this, so for that one I created a link back to the top of the page.

Hope this helps anyone searching for a similar solution!

A $100 million campaign requires a website that looks like a million bucks.

The Minnesota Orchestra’s Building for the Future campaign was designed to provide information and raise money for building renovation, education and artistic initiatives. As such, the website needed to house a wide variety of information that spoke spoke to both the general public and potential donors. Working with feedback from management, PR and Development, I developed a microsite that complimented the look of print materials and provided ample room to grow along with the projects.

Old-fashioned charm brings in fresh faces (and donors).

The Minnesota Orchestra’s annual Symphony Ball was a lovely annual gala fundraising event, but a fresh approach was needed to bring in new participants. How about a side party just for young professionals, who could attend and have a blast with people their own age while still participating in the Ball? When the idea of a 1930’s / Prohibition theme party called “Crash the Ball” was raised, we knew we had a winner. I built the website with a look of a newspaper from that era, with some twists of course. Photos procured from the Minnesota Historical Society added a touch of real history. Links to the event’s Facebook page, Twitter stream and other social media tools gave the event some legs beyond the website. In the end the event was a huge success, raised money for the Orchestra and most importantly laid the foundation for a lasting relationship with a whole new audience.

As a small non-profit, the Loring Park Art Festival didn’t have a lot of resources, but what they did have was great content – beautiful images from the many artist that exhibit at their annual festival in downtown Minneapolis. We decided to capitalize on that by prominently featuring those images, both to illustrate website content and to provide visual interest throughout the site. But I didn’t stop at images; I added lots of easily-accessible content about the festival including transportation, food & entertainment, volunteers, advertising and more. Most significantly I built a database-driven back-end for the artists listings, so that the information could be easily updated and displayed in different useful formats (by artist’s location, medium, etc.).

Dealing with sensitive issues by striking a balance of content, design and website architecture.

Pride Institute was in a bit of a jam; their website content was sorely out of date. That by itself is bad, but in their case it was compounded by the fact that the previous designer had set all of their text as graphics, making it next to impossible for them to make updates. The design needed refreshing too, so after looking at my portfolio and my work with other GLBT-related organizations, they took the opportunity to work with me to update their site’s design and architecture.

Pride Institute is a gay & lesbian mental health and addiction care center; as such the website requires a delicate touch and serve a number of sometimes competing functions:

for people dealing with addiction, the site needs to provide quick and easy access to admissions, facilities and services information

for friends and family, it needs to provide detailed information, support and instill a sense of confidence in Pride Institute

the site also needs to promote Pride Institute and its services in a way that talks about addiction problems and solutions realistically, and speaks to people who are currently at a very low point, but are looking to a brighter future

To meet all these needs, we created a new site that struck a balance: between high-level and detailed information, between information and marketing; and between the negative aspects of addiction and the positives of recovery that Pride Institute’s services offer.

Putting some excitement into a non-profit community library.

The Quatrefoil Library, a then-25-year old community library and archive for gay & lesbian materials, needed a fresh face for it’s primarily text-based website. I’d previously designed a brochure and other materials for the library, so the new website’s design flowed easily out of that. My friend Dave Schmit generously donated his excellent photography skills, so we featured that prominently. In addition to updating and reformatting the content for the website, we provided ample room for growth of the online database-driven catalog, news and special events information.
