Pride Institute website

Dealing with sensitive issues by striking a balance of content, design and website architecture.

Pride Institute was in a bit of a jam; their website content was sorely out of date. That by itself is bad, but in their case it was compounded by the fact that the previous designer had set all of their text as graphics, making it next to impossible for them to make updates. The design needed refreshing too, so after looking at my portfolio and my work with other GLBT-related organizations, they took the opportunity to work with me to update their site’s design and architecture.

Pride Institute is a gay & lesbian mental health and addiction care center; as such the website requires a delicate touch and serve a number of sometimes competing functions:

  • for people dealing with addiction, the site needs to provide quick and easy access to admissions, facilities and services information
  • for friends and family, it needs to provide detailed information, support and instill a sense of confidence in Pride Institute
  • the site also needs to promote Pride Institute and its services in a way that talks about addiction problems and solutions realistically, and speaks to people who are currently at a very low point, but are looking to a brighter future

To meet all these needs, we created a new site that struck a balance: between high-level and detailed information, between information and marketing; and between the negative aspects of addiction and the positives of recovery that Pride Institute’s services offer.
